Humalog Junior KwikPens offers the combined benefits of rapid-acting insulin in a prefilled disposable pen and half-unit dosing to help control your child’s diabetes.

It differs from the Humalog KwikPen since it offers half-unit increments, plus it shouldn’t be refrigerated after first use. Due to its size, it can be carried anywhere for application.

Humalog Junior KwikPens (insulin lispro injection 100 units/mL) are the only prefilled, disposable half-unit insulin pen used to treat those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Humalog Junior KwikPen 100 Units / mLFor children and their caregivers, learning how to inject insulin can be challenging and overwhelming. With the Humalog Junior KwikPen, there are fewer steps involved during the injection process since it’s prefilled and the half-unit increments make dosing more precise.

In the past, delivering a half unit of insulin could only be done through reusable pens that required removing and loading cartridges. With the Humalog Junior KwikPen, this can be easily accomplished through its ability to administer fine-tuned dosing.

Humalog also has KwikPens in Mix 25, Mix 50 and 200 units. They also produce their formula in vials, where the patient can inject themselves using syringes.

Humalog Junior KwikPens are designed to be shorter and lighter than other prefilled half-unit insulin pens. The International Organization has approved its design of Standardization.

Humalog Junior KwikPen offers half-unit increments ideal for those with insulin sensitivity and older adults who require precision when applying their insulin injection and need to round to the nearest whole unit.

Ensure you are correcting the correct insulin, as Humulin and Humalog frequently get mixed up with one another by many customers.

Users can apply finer dose adjustments (0.5 vs. 1 unit dose increments) for people with diabetes who typically require small doses (?30 units) during mealtime of Humalog U-100 (insulin lispro injection 100 units/mL).

Warnings & Precautions

Do not use the Humalog KwikPen Junior if you are allergic to insulin lispro or any Humalog ingredients.

Do not use if your blood sugar levels drop too low (hypoglycemia).

Before starting treatment, speak to your healthcare provider about any liver or kidney issues; or heart failure or heart problems.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, advise your doctor to adjust your medication dosage or stop treatment.

Speak to your doctor if you take any vitamins, supplements, or non-prescription medication, especially if you take prescription medication, including TZDs (thiazolidinediones).

Make sure you are receiving the correct type of Humalog from your pharmacy.

Do not use Humalog if the solution appears cloudy, colored, or contains particles.

Always use a new needle. Do not re-use needles as this can lead to infections and injecting the wrong dosage of Humalog.

Do not operate heavy machinery or drive after you have used this medication.

Do not consume alcohol while using Humalog KwikPen Junior.

Speak to your pharmacist about how to correctly dispose of pens, needles, or syringes safely.

Usage

Humalog KwikPen Junior is a pen that must be injected underneath the skin (subcutaneously). To do this:

  1. Clean the tip of the pen with an alcohol swab and attach the needle.
  2. Choose the required dose.
  3. Clean the skin injection site with alcohol and swab
  4. Pinch the skin and inject into the fold (pinching the skin may not be necessary if you are using a short needle)
  5. Wait a few days before injecting into the same spot again

Do not share your Humalog Junior KwikPen, even if the hand has been changed. Sharing diabetes pens can lead to the transmission of pathogens or the spread of serious infections.

Do not change the insulin you are currently using without advising your doctor first. These changes can result in potential spikes or drops in blood sugar. A healthcare provider should monitor changes.

Insulin doses may require modification due to illness, stress, diet changes, increased physical activity, and other medications you may be taking.

Test your blood glucose levels regularly and as instructed by your doctor. You can do this with a blood glucose monitor or glucose meter.

Humalog should be injected under the skin (subcutaneously). Never inject into a muscle or vein.

Rotate injection sites to avoid skin complications and do not inject into lumpy skin.

Always make sure you are taking the correct insulin dosage.

If you miss a dose, contact a medical professional or pharmacist. Never double an amount to make up for a missed dose.

Side Effects

Although symptoms may differ for all patients, low blood sugar is the most common side effect of taking insulin. Severe low blood sugar levels can lead to hypoglycemia. Low blood sugar can also lead to symptoms including unconsciousness (passing out), seizures, and even death.

If symptoms occur, they should receive immediate attention to stabilize blood sugar levels. Treating low blood sugar is extremely important and can be done by eating a source of sugar, such as glucose tablets, a tablespoon of honey or jam, jelly beans or lifesavers, a tablespoon of sugar, or a non-diet soft drink.

Speak to your doctor if you are experiencing any symptoms of low blood sugar as it may be related to your diet or will require a modification to dosage.
